LKI’s Campbell Mining Services Honda racer Jake Moss stormed back onto the MX1 podium at Round 8 of the 2012 Monster Energy MX Nationals at Appin, NSW on Sunday.
Mossy banged bars at the head of the pack in all three motos, including a third in moto 2 and an impressive second place in the 30-minute final behind points leader Josh Coppins.
“I had a good qualifying position, which put me in a positive frame of mind for the rest of the day,” Mossy said afterward. “I got a really bad start in the first moto and had to make a lot of passes to get to seventh.”
“This track was all about the start, so I focused on getting a good launch off the gate in the second race and it helped a lot. I chased Todd Waters for a while, then he made a mistake and I could get into third behind Cody (Cooper) and Josh (Coppins).”
“The last race was great and I felt strong right up to the end. We’re now heading to Moree, where I’ve put in a lot of time with my dad’s schools and know every line possible. I’m expecting to finish this season on a strong note.”
Jake sits in sixth place in the MX1 points chase.
Also in the MX1 class, Michael Phillips finished 11th overall with a consistent 11-9-12 result.
In the MX2 class Justin McDonald got great starts in all three races, but was let down by crashes in the first two races. His 18th-16th-8th result was only good enough for 14th overall, and remain in ninth in the MX2 championship. McDonald’s MX2 LKI compatriot Errol Willis suffered huge crashes in both the first two motos – the second forcing him to DNF – on his way to 19th overall.
New Zealand LKI rider Rhys Carter also debuted at the MX Nationals with a respectable 11th overall, including a seventh in the opening moto. Expect Cartwheel to turn up behind the start-gate at the final two rounds of the series.
In the MXD class LKI’s Dylan Wills broke into the top 10 for the day with a consistent 10-10-11 result, while fellow LKI rider Wade Hunter came back from a disastrous moto 1 to claim seventh in the second race and a disappointing 14th in the third.
The MX Nationals will swing back into action at Moree, NSW in three weeks time.
